Four Counties under 130 junior team tournament

Report from John Swain

Yorkshire kindly hosted the second of this new series of junior county matches (following the inaugural event back in November at Witham Hall) also involving Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and ourselves. Thanks are due to Phill Beckett, Tony Croasdale and Simon Scott who liaised with juniors at Worksop, West Bridgford and West Notts respectively and who helped us raise the team of twelve and in Phill's case provided transport. There were several conflicting events on the day but this gave opportunities for some to make their debut for the county. We got off to a slow start, losing to Leicestershire 3-9 whilst Yorkshire beat Lincolnshire by the same margin. Things improved in round 2, when we were locked at 4-4 with Yorkshire at one stage, only to lose the remaining boards, some very unluckily; meanwhile Leicestershire demolished Lincolnshire 11½-½. In the final round, we had a comfortable 8-4 victory over Lincolnshire, thereby finishing third, whilst Yorkshire just edged it 6½-5½ against Leicestershire, thereby retaining the trophy they won at Witham Hall (when Notts lost 5½-6½ to Yorkshire).

Thanks are due to Ian Hemingway and Yorkshire for acting as excellent hosts, to Phill Beckett, the ECF's Deputy Manager of Schools Chess, who acted as Controller, to all the parents who ferried their children to the venue (and Vivek Maladkar who also transported county sets) and to the team: Adam Bennett (WN), Ben Gilpin (WB), Ritika Maladkar (WN), Lavanya Maladkar (WN), Daniel Chen (WN, who was our star player with 2½/3), Kiera Bentley (WN), Mathilde Willson-Drummond (WN), Asta Knight (WN), Ross Phillips (Worksop), Cameron Crawford (WB), Kian Chan (WN) and Thomas Greenhalgh (WB).
